Too Busy To Nap

Well, yesterday was quite a busy day, full of problems for my transition into the Uberman Sleep Schedule.

First of all, I went to bed around 3, and got up around 9:30, which is a little problematic. The first problem here is going to bed at 3, especially when I'm trying to be in bed by 1. I really need to get my body used to going to sleep at 1, and not much later than that (which I also failed to do last night). But, since I knew I was going to bed so late, I choose to wake up at 9:30 to try to counter the first problem, which is that I also need to get my body used to getting up at 9:30 (and 1:30 and 5:30). Also, I really wanted some decent sleep, since a few days ago I only got a few hours, then ended up oversleeping my morning nap, then slept in the entire next morning (which is why my Twitter feed has absolutely nothing until the afternoon). I feel that 5-6 hours should be enough to let me function (its just shy of what I'm used to getting - normally going to bed at midnight and waking up at 6:30 or 7), but it's still short enough to cause me to feel slightly tired in the afternoon and evening.

The other problem I had, which was briefly explained in a few tweets, was that I had quite a few plans for the evening that threw off my sleep schedule. The first thing that came up was dinner at 5, which is exactly when my nap was supposed to be. As mentioned in my tweet, I decided to skip that nap, since I'm still just early in the transition phase. This, however, will not be possible when I am on the real schedule. What I probably would have done is taken my 1 PM nap slightly earlier, at something like 12:45 or so. Then, I'd take my 5 PM nap as late after 4 as possible to give me a full nap and plenty of time to arrive at my destination.

The final hiccup(s) last night came from spending time with my brother. After dinner, we went out to see Priests in the theater by my apartment. After some initial car problems (which I'll have to blog about later), we got to the movie and enjoyed it. We didn't end up getting back until 9:15 or so, which wasn't bad. If I were on the Uberman schedule, I would have had to send him into the living room so that I could take a quick nap, but I weighed my options, and figured that I'd be okay skipping the nap to spend time with my brother. We played games, and ended up watching my Blu-Ray copy of How To Train Your Dragon, which I'm not afraid to admit is an AMAZING movie! (My girlfriend was a bit more eccentric about it than I was, and ended up buying HTTYD bed sheets, window shade, and the largest kids shirt she could find, so that it'd fit her - but that's not what this blog is about, so we'll press on) HTTYD didn't end until 2 or so, and it was another 15-30 minutes until I got him setup in my bed, and I took my place on the couch. You see how much I love him? Actually, the decision was also made because I knew my roommate was out partying, and I didn't want him to walk in on my brother, so I had him walk in on my, and I vaguely remember having some sort of conversation, but can't remember what was said. I'll have to ask my roommate about that sometime today. P.S. If you didn't catch the pun at the top of this paragraph, read it again. If still nothing, go watch HTTYD, then read it again. =D

So yeah, that was my day in a nutshell. The few days before that, Blogger was down, and the day after that I just completely forgot, but nothing really interesting happened those days. I tried to nap, possibly failed (possibly horribly), and then figured out what to do if/when I did fail. Other than my 1 morning of oversleeping my 9 AM nap until 11:30, and the 1 morning that I slept from 1 AM until noon or so, I've been pretty good at sticking to my naps.

The naps themselves are still not anywhere near where they need to be. I do still have trouble falling asleep most of the time. It seems that it's taking me 10-20 minutes just to fall asleep. When I am wake up, it doesn't feel refreshing or relaxing. I just feel a slight tiredness that you get when waking up in the morning. I'm not entirely sure how I managed to get decent naps during my final exams (in honesty, it's probably from the lack of sleep at night because I was working on finals every waking hour), but this whole transition period is meant to train myself to nap better before I'm required to nap better. I think that given another week of 4-5 hours of sleep at night and regular (non-overslept) naps will definitely help when I make the full switch.
